About Sunday School
Sunday School is offered during the program year to children grades pre-K through fifth grade during the 9:00 a.m. family service in the Bank Barn. Parents drop-off their children to the teachers in the classrooms on the lower level. There are two classrooms: pre-K through second grade and third through fifth grade. The children return to the service during the exchange of the Peace.
All young children are welcome to Sunday School, regardless of their religious background or training, whether they have been baptized, or whether their families are parishioners at St. Peter’s. Through formation of children in heart, mind, and soul, we seek to:
- help children grow in their personal love, knowledge and experience of God in Christ Jesus;
- help children know they are loved by God;
- help children know they are valued and cherished members of St. Peter’s community;
- encourage formation of strong friendships;
- create an enjoyable experience that brings children back.
Each Sunday’s lesson is based on one of the scripture readings appointed for that day, and the teachers present it through storytelling, play acting, writing, art, and games. They also practice Bible verses that help the children remember to share God’s love with others. Most lessons focus on the gospel reading and lead each child to know the love of Jesus. The hope also, is for children to form strong and enduring friendships with each other.
The children regularly participate in an outreach project that benefits ministries supported by the parish, including the Clinic and Church Housing. Advent and Christmas bring opportunities to create Advent wreaths and to participate in the Christmas Eve Pageant.
It is unavoidable that activities conflict with children’s regular attendance in Sunday School. Please know that children can attend as their schedules permit. For more information on Sunday School, please contact sundayschool@stpetersgv.org.
