Silent Auction 2003
Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me
more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you."
Jesus said, "Feed my lambs."
John 21:15
The Silent Auction, held at St. Peter's Church in the Great Valley on October 25, was an opportunity for parishioners and others in our community to gather in a festive spirit to assist four important ministries in our greater community. This event, sponsored by our Outreach Commission, raised over $25,000 for The Clinic, The Seaman's Church Institute, Pennsylvania Home of the Sparrow, and Good Works.
The Clinic in Phoenixville provides free or low-cost medical, dental, and psychological services to uninsured person in our community.
The Seaman's Church Institute in Philadelphia is a mission of hospitality and addresses the needs of seafarers in the ports of Philadelphia. They provide telecommunications, access to medical aid, recreational programs, and counseling.
Pennsylvania Home of the Sparrow provides temporary housing for women and children in crises, offering them a safe haven, and while there, the tools to rebuild their lives.
Good Works, Inc. in Coatesville helps improve people's lives by repairing or rebuilding homes that have fallen into dangerous disrepair.
One of the evening's events was a live auction which featured such items as a week's stay in an English guest cottage, a large oil painting of the Madonna holding the Christ Child, and the sheep pastel donated by Anne Reid which provided our invitation cover and fit in nicely with our theme of "Feed My Sheep." Master of Ceremonies Ian Alexander kept a lively pace as he worked through the list of items.
Music was provided by Sweet Lew and the Jayhawks, of which our own rector, John Tampa, is a member. They kept us dancing throughout the evening and made us laugh with the always popular "Layreader's Blues," a poetic rendition of tongue-twisting Biblical names. The hors d'oeuvres were prepared and donated by an army of almost-professional chefs at St. Peter's and served by members of our own youth group. Dinner was handled by the capable staff of J. Francis Catering in Conshohocken. Our bar was stocked with good things from our own local Chadds Ford Winery and Moore Brothers as well as Harlan Beverages.
A special thank you goes to all the hardworking friends of Outreach who worked on the Silent Auction committee: Ian Alexander, Ned Bleecker, Suzanne Casey, Sandra Czapla, Linda diValerio, Jean Duncan, David and Kristin Eddy, Andrew and Claire Field, The Gathering of Men, Sue Gilmore, Lisa Gresh, Jason and Beth Hacker, Linda Holden, Marie Kenkelen, Molly Kulp, Dan and Larisa Leon, Carolyn Lowery, Pat McLennan, Jennifer Pioch, Randy and Brenda Powlus, David Stanger, Penny Stanger, Julie Tampa, Jill Wilson, and Lori Wrenn. We are also grateful to photographer Angela Hutton. The third time he
said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?"
He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.
" Jesus said,
"Feed my sheep.
