A Listing of Burials in the Churchyard
of the Church of Saint Peter's in the Great Valley
From the Year 1737 through 1920
During the Rectorship of the Venerable Jules Louis Prevost, M.D. (1910-1924), Dr. Prevost commissioned a longtime St. Peter's parishioner, Miss Ellen Gooding, to compile a meticulous listing of all burials and associated information within the original St. Peter's Churchyard, often referred to as "the sacred acre". He rightly suspected that the then-current parish records did not accurately reflect actual burials. Miss Gooding's survey was completed in January 1921. Her diligence substantiated a total number of graves almost one-third more than the official documentation had shown.
The original log chapel erected between 1711-15 to serve the initial St. Peter's congregation appears to have been adjacent to an earlier graveyard. Accounts describe the earliest headstone with a date of 1703, but this stone has long disappeared. The earliest documented grave found by Miss Gooding was dated 1737 (Gwen Davis). There are 37 recorded burials from the eighteenth century, at least four of whom are buried beneath the current church building. This number does not include the eight plain fieldstone markers which we believe lie atop the graves of unnamed Continental and British combat casualties from the September 1777 Battle of Paoli.
In 1980 and 1981, Miss Elizabeth Rumrill, then Historian of St. Peter's Church, published Miss Gooding's unabridged work in the Tredyffrin-Easttown History Club Quarterly. This record was taken directly from Miss Gooding's original work.
Here then, by alphabetic listing of last names, are the recorded burials of 389 persons buried within the churchyard of St. Peter's Church in the Great Valley from the year 1737 to 1920, accompanied by each epitaph in full exactly as recorded by Miss Gooding:Eva Acnes 1881-1900 [on same stone as Robert T.
