This week, returning members of the study group, joined by some new learners, talked about the challenge of practicing the presence of God during the previous week. It was, by turns, hard and exciting and new. We are trying to build our relationship with God and that takes work.
We talked again about the selflessness that comes with this effort, and how Brother Lawrence said that we first think about God, then know something about God, then love God.
Brother Lawrence is matter-of-fact. He tells us to skip the long speeches, to keep things simple, to do it or don’t do it. When we fall into sin, we are to pray about it and to tell God that without God’s help to change, we’re going to keep doing the same thing, then forget the sin and move on.
The challenges for this week are (1) continue to experiment with an attitude of doing everything that we do for the love of God and (2) think about how God speaks to us. In our next class, we will consider Brother Lawrence’s reaction to suffering and misfortune.
