Habitat coordinator Bob Henderson
introduces the Somalian homeowners to the St. Peter's team
One of the highlights of our week in Buffalo was an authentic Somalian luncheon prepared by the new homeowners, the Mohamould family, and served to the volunteers after our Eucharist.
Today was the third day of working on the house on Congress St. People were all continuing
and finishing the jobs that they had been working on, and at lunch time, we got to meet a few members of the family whose home we’re fixing – they brought us lunch at the worksite. They had obviously spent a long time preparing the enormous amount of food, and their time was not for nothing; the food was amazing! There was rice with vegetables, puffed up squares of bread, triangles packed with ground beef, and a few other things. The family members we met (including the mother, father, and youngest son, Ali) were very nice and we took a bunch of group pictures before they left.
After lunch, everyone got back to work, including Nancy, who learned how to break up concrete in the back yard (there are, of course, multiple pictures of this to use later as proof and/or blackmail). After leaving the work site, we all went back to the dorms, where a few people went swimming and the rest of us relaxed before we went to the Anchor Bar for dinner.
At the Anchor Bar, we got a phenomenal amount of wings – 110! Most people ate the medium and hot wings, but Jay and Adriana both tried the suicidal wings. The food at dinner was great, making that the second delicious (and large) meal of the day.
All in all, I’d say this was definitely a great day.
